MY WOOD GLOAT! PURPLE PLUM
(click on the purple plum link above)

My Father had two purple plum trees taken down last year, and I asked for the stump sections and maybe a piece of limb.
I opened them up this evening and man was I surprised! I just wish I had collected more of the limbs,as even the limb of 3-4" diameter has some great coloring.
The stumps are fantastic, IMHO!
The chainsaw worked to get them to this point, now I have to figure
out if my work will let me bandsaw them on their big 24".
I have no bandsaw but wishing I did right now!!:)
I can't wait to pull some blanks out of these babies!!:biggrin:
Thanks for letting me share.

John, those are plum pretty.........you knew that was coming,right? Anyway, yea you should be gloating. Nice chunks!!

John Very nice wood, sure has some nice potential for great turnings, I know what you mean about a band saw, I used to use the 17 in powermatic at school, pretty slow going with a metal blade, and about 125 rpm, but it worked cutting quite a bit of maple and every one just loved it when I cut antler,

Thanks guys, I'm eager to turn something from this! :biggrin:

Rob, I appreciate the offer on the bandsaw but it would cost me a fortune
in gas to drive!:eek::)

Nice. I'll take lot 3,4 and 9. Did you get the actual stump out? Plum isn't that big. Dig a bit on each side, pound a stake under it, slide in a chain and hook it to the hitch on the truck and pull it out.

Jeff, no stumps.. Dad already doped them a bunch to kill them,
and just had them ground down with a stump grinder.
Sounds like w__k anyways!:rolleyes::biggrin:

Sweet Johnny,

I've got a plum in my yard that I may have to take out next year. Its got some kind of weird growth all over the limbs and I'm scared to eat the fruit because of it. Too bad, it has a baby burl on one section, but I may not be able to leave it long enough to mature.

I'm going to trim back all the branches this winter and see what happens next spring.

Hi Mike,
sounds like you may have a good one there.
if you trim it, be sure to check out the branches!
I got one branch 3-4" dia that has great coloring all the way thru!
Wish I had got all the branches of any size from ours.

Looks like some nice bowl blanks there... you could chainsaw of the corners and finish rounding on the lathe... I do that with most of my BB's.... my band saw is only a 14" Delta with only 6" under the blade so can't really get my bigger pieces under there... getting ready to hack up some logs this week... if my back will hold out... it kills me after a couple of hours on the chainsaw.

I hadn't thought of bowls, Chuck, but now that you mention it..
I'll confess to never have turned a bowl. On the list for someday!
I know what you mean on your back, I was nearly cramped from goofing around with
my plum logs. (long time wood lover, basically first time chainsaw user here).
