I have not tried segmenting, but reading messages and viewing the great work here, I have decided to give it a shot. And I have some questions.

What is the recommended thickness of the metal?
What is normally used to adhere the wood to the metal? Epoxy? CA?

Is there anything I can read somewhere about building the blanks? I read Mike's great post and wonder if there were any others on process and design.

I'm going to Home depot and get Al roof flashing and give it a try.

Any guidance to a newbie would be appreciated.

Go to the library section, select blanks, order a pizza, sit down and read, most any question you may have has already been answered and you will find them there.

Don't use brad point bits when drilling blanks with metal segmented into the blank.
Take your time when drilling & turning. Heat will cause the glue (both CA & epoxy) to fail.
Use lots of CA to keep things together when turning.
Blowouts are very common, so don't give up. It happens to all of us.

Wewlcome to the world of segmenting. Hopefully a moderator can move this posting to the segmenting forum. Right now you are in the casting foru and stabilisation forum.

But as mentioned in the library there are articles about segmenting and you will find alot of your answers. But to give a quick answer. Any thickness of metal can be used. If you are looking at just some thin material to accent a segment then flashing is the best way to go. Make sure you sand both side to give it some tooth and to take off any oil residue. I always like to use epoxy when gluing metals to woods. I have on occassion used med CA if i was in a hurry but that is very rare.

Plan you cuts and your moves and always dry fit things and have clamps or a system to clamp set up ahead of time. I always work my blanks square and then round off when doing complicated segments. Simple ones can be done either round or square. If it is a simple segmentation I always build the blank on the tube. By that I mean I predrill all the parts and then assemble on the tube. Lest chance for blowouts. As mentioned do not use brad point bits.

Good luck and as you get into it just post your questions and they will get answered.
