Hey All -

Thanks collectively for all of the help you've provided me as I've been lurking for a week or two. Just recently started turning pens and have found it to be quite addictive and therapeutic after a long day doing stuff I'd rather not be....

I don't plan on this being any more than a hobby for me, no intentions to sell, but I would like to be able to 'turn' out a quality product as gifts, etc. There is a wealth of experience and information here that should certainly get me started on the right path.

I've made only 10-12 pens so far, but my imagination is moving faster than my skill set. I love the segmented pens, celtic knots, and anything laminated; so this has provided ample opportunity to daydream at work. This last pen in bog oak has more defects than I can count, so I hope the photo hides most of them:)

Thanks again in advance for the assistance up to this point.

Dave

Welcome Dave, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/librar...en_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.

Nice pen Dave, I don't see the mistakes you were talking about! Very nice, clean lines! Good to have you here and I can't wait to see what you put out!

A hearty welcome to you from Spokane, WA. There are always plenty of people on this site to ask about whatever question you might have.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome! As far as the pen goes, I'll say that the beauty of still photography is that it only tells part of the story! The finish is mediocre at best, the segments don't line up (I used guitar pickguard for the segments which was slightly thinner than the 3/32 saw blade), and I could go on. The thing about striving for perfection is that it's a never ending quest. But I hopefully learn from the screw ups, and, at the end of the day, it's still fun to do.
