I thought I'd take a minute to introduce myself, I just registered a few days ago and haven't posted anything yet. Been reading everything, though.

Just started turning pens about a 9 months ago, and have made several dozen since.

Kit pens have sort of lost much of their appeal to me as there is only so much one can do to them to make something unique in style, so I am now making what I call semi-kits which use a few of the kit parts that are difficult to make but then diverge from the kit design. Kitless is mainly where I intend to go. I'm not really into fancy stuff, though I certainly appreciate it, as I'm basically utilitarian and like things that are both artistic in their own right but also simple in design and fully intended to be used rather than just looked at.

Lately, I find myself more and more interested in fountain pens than other types but still see a use for making all the various types of pens.

I must say I'm very impressed with all the knowledge I see posted here, some probably bordering on genius (at least to me). Hopefully I'll be able to make as least some small contributions as well.

Welcome from Va,
Just jump right in.You are right there is a ton of knowledge on here and most of the people don't mind sharing it.Let's see some of your work we always like to see pics.

Welcome from the Mile High City. Are you anywhere near Denver?? If so you might want to take in the Front Range Turners or if you are up north Ft. Collins area you might want to stop at the Rocky Mountain Woodturners. There is also a Club in Colorado Springs and in Pueblo.

Welcome Frank, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. You mention that you have read some of the site, be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.
