Thanks, everybody. To tell the truth, I have been working with wood for years. My dad even owned a lumber yard. I have never turned anything. I have never worked with a lathe so this will be my first time. I'm just looking for some tips on turning pens or bowls. I am amazed with what people have done with pens on this site!

Welcome from Arkansas.

Have you read through the Library? There are several articles on the basics. I read & re-read this area before I spent my 1st dime. One thing I would do, is ask all your questions here before you make a purchase.

For example: I was about to buy my 1st accessories just for pen turning. One of the items was a pen mandrel. Almost every place you look, you see a pen turned & finished on a mandrel. When going through the Library, I read about turning between centers, and I've never bought or even used a mandrel for turning pens. I'm not saying that's the best for you, and don't want to start a debate about which is better. What I am saying is that there are different ways to accomplish many of the steps to make a quality pen. And if you make your decisions on what you think will work best for you, you'll probably save some money. And in this hobby, that's a really good thing.
