I'm wondering if Casting & Stabilization needs a new Sub-Catagory called "DON'T GO THERE!!":eek::rolleyes::wink:

With the first two gallons of resin I went through I threw everything in my craft room that wasn't nailed (or accidentally glued) down into my little casting "buckets". Glitter, ribbon, fabric, labels, sequins, big and little beads, shavings, yarn, string, bits of wood, cut-offs, pom poms, buttons, silk flowers.... and, of course, not everything worked but some did. It made for a great learning curve though.

Glitter, BTY, sinks to the bottom.... so do sequins in my experience. Most things are too heavy. Powdered pigments (Pearl Ex, Coastal Scents, Art Stuf) work perfectly for casting both in the coloring dept. as well as metallic, pearls, sparkles, etc. Each of the brands/websits mentioned carry "starter packs".

Maybe we can save some of the "first-timers" a few gallons of product.

The IAP has an incredible wealth of information..... research it and have a blast!

Trying new things and having failures and successes is part of the journey. ANYBODY can just follow directions to a predicted outcome. By trying and failing you learn what NOT to do which will make you a better craftsman. And doesn't it make you feel GREAT when you figure something out BY YOURSELF? It does me.:biggrin:
The price of two gallons of resin is a SMALL price to pay for all the knowledge you've gained.

Just come up with a catchy acronym like DNGT (Do Not Go There), that way it's four letters and the search engine will be happy. Then, make a sticky about the use of the acronym DNGT and then people can search the casting forum for the word "DNGT".

If people put it in the thread topics that are specifically about casting failures then the search would pull up most of the relevant threads.

DNGT=Fish food in flake form...it can be done BUT it is ONE STINKY PEN....well...at least that is what my "Friend" told me ;) One advantage though is you will never have to look too long if you misplace it, just follow the stink and second advantage is nobody would want to steal it and if they do just hope they leave it in their car on a hot summer day.

Whew .. now I don't feel so bad about the experimental 'Gym Socks" casting fiasco:biggrin:

I spent a month picking and drying flowers last spring to cast in silmar. It didnt work so I tried alumilite and messed it up too. Now Ive waited so long that the purple color in my dried lilac as turned an off grey. The money lost was only the cherry on the top after the days and back pain of pulling the little flowers out of the clusters and leaves. I dont think I'll be trying that anytime soon.

Don't try dog food or kitty litter either. They both made a hell of a mess and just didn't come out with the intended effect. I wonder what dried brine shrimp would be like....aahh never mind.

Me too........... until I looked back at the "BIG oops" pic I just posted in the oops thread......

Oh well - back to the workbench
