Two weeks ago we began our 2009 antler shed hunting season. Four hours in the woods and no antlers (DEEP snow) but found a place with plenty of moose sign to return to in the spring. Yesterday we drove a couple hours to northern New Hampshire to prospect another new place. This time we found the first moose shed of the season. Still plenty of snow and the dog didn't smell it until he almost tripped over it. The only bad thing is that it is a perfect antler, so I won't be cutting it up for pens (that honor goes to the chewed up ones we find). Anyway, I was lucky to even see it. Turned out to be a smallish shed that weighed 3-1/4 pounds. We'll return to that spot in a month or so to look for the other side when the snow has melted some.
