I would like to introduce the newest pen turner in our family. My oldest Grandson Justin learned last Summer and now it is his cousin Tori age 6 who is starting. We have provided day care for Tori since she was 6 weeks old, so she has spent much time in the shop with me "working" as she calls it. She has helped on pens in the past, usually with the MM/polishing and assembling part. She has also mixed up batches of Alumalite. She wanted to make pens for her 2 Kindergarten Teachers so we decided on a Sierra Kit and Cav's Uni Pink blanks. I cut a blank in half and rounded them off and she is doing the rest under my full supervision. She drilled the blank on the Lathe and painted and glued the tube in using Epoxy. I squared the blank on the disk sander and she is turning them. I have mini set of chisels that are perfect for her to use. It takew a while to turn the blank and she take frequent breaks which is fine she is also very careful using the tools. I will post more picture as we progress.

My oldest Grandson was at Nolan's last summer for the Nor/Central Cal. get together and became a Alumalite caster. The other two Grandkids who are twins will get their chance the summer when they visit. They all have their own set of tools and when all 4 are here I get out of the shop and let them have at it. That is after all the power tools have been unpluged and made safe.

Fantastic! You never know where this experience may lead her! I love the dress and fingernail polish!

I/we raised 2 boys and now LOML is waiting for one of them to get married and provide the daughter she never had.

Can't you just see her in a few years when some "boy" tells her something about girls not knowing anything about tools, or cars, or .....

Great job!

How cool. My grandkids are 2 and 1, so I have a little while to late, but my 2 year old grandson already walks around the shop pointing out everything!:)

Tom that is really neat having the grandkids spend time with you in the shop. Cherished time. She looks like she has the hang of it--really concentrating.COOL.

that is awesome teach them young the respect of tools and they will be able to fix more things than they can count when they get older. I was taught by my Dad and I used to think that I knew very little about carpentry, electrical, plumbing, metal work and just generally being able to fix things but then I started talking to my freinds and they look to me to fix things because they know that I can, I still have a long time to go before I will be called a jack of all trades like my father
