LOML has a new knee that she had installed three weeks ago. She bought the deluxe model, complete with ball joint, connectors and a nifty new kneecap. After a seriously threatening complication she is back on her feet and able to drive to therapy. Just in time too, I'm over my limit of laundry, cleaning, taking the dog out, and getting kids to where ever they need to go.

I was examining a steel and polymer replacement knee when I took her for a doctor visit yesterday. A replacement knee is an amazing piece of equipment; mirco precise tolerances, built to function for an extended period of time in a damp environment without maintenance, subject to repetitive usage under heavy loads (of course I mean carrying a heavy load, not being a heavy load), available in a hugh range of sizes that are stepped up and down in very small increments.

It seems that if a replacement knee can be built to meet those specs, it should be possible to build a pen that wouldn't leak after running it through the washing machine...OK I didn't check the pockets all that well when I was doing the laundry.

Glad to hear she is doing well, every one I talk to who has had similiar surgery say they wish they had done it sooner. Its good to screw up the laundry on occasion it reminds the boss why she does not want you doing it.[}:)]

I like Phil's answer.

Glad to hear the "little woman" is almost "back on her feet". Both of my parents have had both knees replaced. They are thrilled. (Mom's first one is nearly 15 years old, now). Each one is a bit easier - technological advances and smarter PT. (Patient torture)

Good one, Gerry! You might want to check the price differential between a bionic knee and a pen kit, though! [:D][:D][;)]

Cav your are right, a knee implant costs more than a pen kit--about $4,000-5,000 more. I wonder what the actual cost of materials, machine time, production labor and packaging would be for a knee implant? Probably not much more than a good fountain pen. I think this is probably a place to spend a few thousand $ more to get a really good one. The implants are gender specific, I really don't know what the differance between an implant for a man or a woman is.

Gerry,

Glad to hear she's doing well. I worked for a carbide cutter manufacturer in Salt Lake City about 18 years ago and one of the cutters we made in small runs was a carbide cutter that shaped the end of human leg bones to fit an artificial joint. It was pretty cool. IIRC it had a stainless steel body that the carbide pieces were silver soldered to. As far as I can recall that was the only item we made that was used in a surgical inviornment. Most everything was just for cabinet shop type work.

The knee implants for guys are designed so they can spent a lot of time kneeling on the ground and begging forgiveness for their most recent stupidity!! [:D][:D]
