Hey,
Just joined IAP last month and have been busy "collecting" information and trying to figure out what tools and materials to start out with. Santa is bringing me a mandrel for my lathe in a couple weeks but he doesn't know I need the other stuff as I have been naughty. Well not naughty, naughty as it goes.
Anyway I love all of the post of pens from the pen Gods and this mere mortal is totally envious at this stage.

Welcome from Allendale. I had to look up your location, never heard of it. We like to take short trips up there. You can't help but enjoy and learn from the IAP.

Welcome Kim, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. You mention that you have read some of the site, be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

The Little Voice

Well now, I didn't expect so many warm Welcomes from so many. Thank you all for your directions and advice.

My addiction has peaked to a new level this year. My nephew, Ryan, delivers our cut and split firewood by the dump truck load each fall. Maple, Ash, Red and White Oak, Walnut sometimes, Birch and stuff that I can't identify. I then stack each piece under cover to wait for winter and "the annual project wood destruction". Each time I have to put wood into the wood stove, I cry and whine. Drives my wife nuts.. She has called Ryan and told him to "never bring nice wood to us again, bring the ugliest wood you can". I am thinking "YES" bring the old, gnarly, twisted, burly, worm eaten wood. My house will never be warm from the wood stove again.. Hah.

I digress.

I am now going to the shop and watch over the growing stack of newly rescued spalted maple firewood. Are there others out there that share this pain? Ah the agony, the despair, what to do.... what to do.

OK, Alright, Lets make pens.. the little voice says.
What?
Yes that's it, make pens. Spend a little money and gather a few more specialty tools a you will be well in no time.. the voice says...

I know I will never be well...again

Kim has it bad, he has it real bad and even admits it. I keep trying to figure out how to use the sawdust. I have a very bad case of 'pack-rat-itus'. Or so says my bride.
