I have a Jet vs. "Mini" who's motor is making a funny noise and I am sure is on it's way out. I first took the belt pressure off of the pulley and it still made the noise, it sounds like fan blades rubbing against something in a clicking sort of way. You can feel it when turning by hand. It is hard to turn the motor backwards and comes to a stop quickly. I took the brushes out and they look fine. I was hoping the brushes ran through and that was making the noise but no such luck. I looked for a replacement motor from Jet and I believe the price was $260.00, a little out of hand if you ask me. I also looked at the PSI motor due to the price but the comments make me wonder. I like to turn bowls from time to time and less "Grunt" would not be good. So my question is, if you have had to replace a motor what did you do? Is there a better place to get a replacement motor other than Jet? Aftermarket? Can I get my current motor refurbished?

Any comments would be would be greatly appreciated.

I have been in the motor and control business for forty years. Sounds like to me that one of the magnets has broken or come loose inside the motor. If this is the case it is probably not repairable. although I have one of those lathes I am not sure if there is a replacement available. Check frame size, shaft size and other motor measurements when comparing them to a replacement.

I bought a used Jet Mini VS that had a problem similar to what you described. It turned out that the magnets had come loose and broken. The motor had bits of ground up magnet inside that eventually caused it to start tripping the reset switch.

I replaced it with the PSI VS kit and I've been using it for about a year now. No real complaints but one odd feature is a noticeable delay between flipping the switch and the motor starting up. I've gotten used to it now but at first, I was thinking something was binding it up.

All I've turned is pens and an occasional bottle stopper. The power is certainly adequate for my needs but it may not be up to turning larger bowls.

HOW OLD IS YOUR LATHE? Jet WARRANTY IS 2 YEars on older lathes and they recently went to a 5 year warranty. Maybe you can get a free replacement.

Wouldn't hurt to disassemble the thing and take a look. Maybe there is some dust or dirt that needs to be blown out or maybe it is some other simple thing that you can resolve. Don't take it apart, though until you are sure it is out of warranty.

Another thing to do is get out your Yellow Pages and see if there is a motor shop in your area. They may be able to rebuild the thing for less than what a new one costs.

Thanks for the advise guys. I bought the lathe almost 2 years ago and it was used then. It does not have the indexing pin on it if that helps with the age. It has been a great little lathe and I can tell you I have gotten my $150.00 out of it. I am going to look in the Yellow Pages and I am pretty sure there is an electric motor place here in town next to Costco. I guess this could be a sign to step up and get something new. That new Midi Delta shure looks nice.

Have a great weekend,
