I am a Journeyman, Machine Repairman, at GM in Bedford, Indiana, a Christian, a father, and a husband. I love muscle cars, fishing, and woodworking. Christmas, 2012, was my 1st opportunity to make pens. I made cartridge pens for my brother-in-law and father-in-law. I made a Kauri slim style pen & pencil set for my dad on Father's Day this year, and I completed the wife's Birthday present just last week. It's a slim style Pink Ivory Pen & Pencil set. I made my own pen cases for each one. I use a metal lathe with carbide cutting tools to turn the wood. I prefer to let the natural color of the wood show, so I love using colorful exotics and figured woods. I'm also cheap, so I love finding discarded wood sources. I can't pass a fallen tree or a fire wood pile without wondering what hidden treasures are waiting to be revealed. I also make other woodcrafts like crochet hooks, sea urchin ornaments, acornaments, boxes, a delft rack, and book shelves. I love the smell of sawdust, and I am in awe of all the beautiful colors and hidden grain structures revealed by working the wood.

Great to have you Mike! You will find this to be a wonderful support group for woodworking and life ... almost like a family. So, dive head first into the sawdust with us and let's see what pops out!

Welcome from Georgia Mike. This is certainly the place to be for all things pen related. You will find great vendors who are IAP members as well.

Welcome to the group from Wichita Falls, Tx! Oh, and you know how you are eyeballin wood, yeah, ummm, thats called the "addiction"! Welcome to it! hahahahahaha! It gets way better too! I look forward to seeing some of your work!

A shout out from Westfield, Indiana, a little farther up the road. If you're up for a road trip there's a pen making demo at the Indy Rockler store July 5th starting at 10am. Usually have several pen guys show up.

Thanks for the warm welcome

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Elsewhere in the forum some have suggested I add some photos. Here is a Pink Ivory Slim Line pen & pencil set I just completed for the wife's upcoming birthday. She loves office supplies like pens so this should go over well. The mahogany pen case is subtlety shaped like a heart. I used a vertical mill with a ball end bit to mill the slots. I like to use small rare earth magnets as closures. I was not happy with this type of barrel hinge, & will be looking elsewhere for a better style.
