Hi folks, my name is Scott. I just found this site and am very excited by the information I've found so far. I've been turning a few pens for a short period of time and have just turned a number of Bolt Action models from PSI.

Most of my woodworking is small furniture, with my favorites being side tables. I'm finding pen turning very satisfying though, as from start to finish is very quick compared to a furniture project.

I think the hardest part of making/selling pens is the photographing of them. It is definitely an art in getting the right light and as little flash/glare as possible! I have aways to go in regards to that.

I just started myself and have been eyeballing those bolt action kits for a day or two now. Anything particularly tricky about them?

They are very easy to turn. I prefer using the acrylics versus a wood blank, as it just make the pen classier. I would recommend turning the pen as close to the bushing size as possible. I turned a few a bit thicker on purpose, and folks that have looked at them said the fatter ones didn't quite have the comfortable weight distribution the thinner ones had. Certainly something to think about.
