Howdy My name is Rick and I live in palmer Alaska. I have been turning pens, as well as other stuff, for about a year and recently started selling my pens. So far the response from my costomers has been wonderful! I work mostly in "Alaskan" materials, antler, bone (Mammoth and whale) walrus ivory and if someone orders it Mammoth ivory. I also work with burled and spalted native Alaskan trees.....there is only 6 of them, 5 if alder is considered a bush.

Welcome from Southeast (Alaska) --

(P.S I think there are more than 6 trees on the list for Alaska. I get some respectible bowls from the Red Alder, but Sitka Alder us usually limited to bottle stoppers. )

Ken in Juneau

welcome aboard! my brother worked on a mission trip in Palmer about 25 years ago, built a firehouse I believe...still standing?

Welcome Rick! This is a great site with very talented folks. I was stationed in Kodiak for 13 years. I really miss Alaska. I really like turning antler and bone, I'd like to see some of your work so please post some pics.

Howdy Ken! Lets see birch, alder, cotton wood, black spruce and blue spruce, willow......thats it around here my friend. Southeast has a LOT more diversity than mainland Alsaka, woulda been more accurate to say 6 in my neck of the woods. ;>)

Welcome to the IAP also from Alaska!
I work with many of the same materials you do.
Mammoth bone is one of my all time favorites.

Mammoth bone is nice to work with, I love the sence of history and the "oooooo golly" effect of working with it. I do a fair amount of fishing near you! Lots of very good and creative people down your way.

Aways interested in turning new materials Frank, I am also a bowyer and frequently get 6-8 foot long logs mailed to me from Hawaii.........my mail man hates me! Where in California is Paso Robles? I was lead guide at Monterrey Bay Kayaks for a season, neat area with some awesome surf!

Hmmm not sure, I'll do some checking though. Was it in the city of Palmer itself?

not sure... it was a church mission and I know they based in Palmer...think it was in the city, the pics had other buildings around. would have been round 1983-85.

Mountian veiw is downtown now Ben the state is growing way to fast!

Goodturns

I'll do a bit of checking for ya. I didnt come north till 1999, origonally form the upper peninsula of Michigan. Moved to Alaska cause the weather is better and were a few jobs left. I currently am a stay at home dad, what an awesome place to raise a kid! I have got to be one of the luckiest men I know! I hunt and fish when I want and my son is my favorite hunting pard.
