I'm very new to the pen turning, but I'm excited to learn. I found one that I would like to try, obviously this won't be a first pen or anything. But I would like to try this kit at a later date...

Sheriff Laser-Cut Inlay Pen Kit Blank - Rockler Woodworking Tools

My question about this kit and if there is a click pen I could use for this setup instead of the twist pen that it shows? Any info you smart people have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jeremy

Welcome, Jeremy,

The kit shown is the Sierra family. A number of different manufacturers make compatible kits in both twist and click versions. In some cases, the click versions use slightly different tube lengths but may still work (look in the library for comparison of kits). I believe the Gatsby click pen from PSI, at least, may be close enough (their specs show it uses a 2.25" tube vs the 2.21" for the standard sierra).

Look around Exotics and let me know (PM) which kits you like. I will be happy to provide you with the length of the tube because, as PenMan says, the click pens are "transitioning" from longer to shorter tubes. It is, at this moment, confusing!!

:):) Jeremy; If you want to try something a little different, double tube the sherif blank to reduce it to a 3/8" tube. The blank is long enough to take many kits that are out there. If the kit you choose is longer, add colored rings top and bottom. Drill the rings to fit the 3/8" tube so you will have wood at the tapered ends. I use these laser kits (27/64" tubes) all the time on Vertex and other single barrel pen kits. It gives you a longer more ballaced pen, takes away the chubby look of the Sieara and Gatsby, and gives you a much larger choise of kits to use. Also be careful on how much you take off when you turn any laser kit or you may loose some of the details. Jim S

Welcome from Indiana! I recently made the police version of that for a retiring police chief. I put it on an Elegant beauty Sierra from Berea per the customer request. I hope the pic shows up. I'm using forum runner and this is the first time I have tried to post a pic.

Welcome Jeremy! You have found the mother lode of pen knowledge. If it's not on IAP, you probably don't need to know it!

Thanks everybody, already got some great advice and some great ideas. Richard, that looks great, I like the box too, very nice. Harry, I agree, it seems like if it's not on here it's because it doesn't exist.

The Elegant Sierra twist tube is 2.21"
The Elegant Sierra click tube is 1.90", this kit is out of a new shipment from Bear Tooth.
