Hello everyone, My name is Ralph and I'm from NYC. I haven't touched a lathe since high school MANY moons ago but have been wanting to get into pen turning for years after purchasing a few at a local craft shop upstate. Right now i have zero equipment but plan on making my first purchase this summer. I figure what better place to learn about the craft than here? Looking forward to getting to know everybody.

Hello Sgt.
Welcome from sunny Florida. My best advice Read, read, read, then take your time, things will come, but there's a learning curve as in everything. Also if you are handy try and make a lot of the tools needed yourself can save a lot of $$$.:)

Good Luck

Hi Ralph, If you need a lathe I have an almost new Jet 1014 that was used very little. I got 4 in a trade and thinking of selling 2 to help upgrade my bandsaw. I'm not going sell them till around May. If your interested I live in Vermont accross Lake Champlain from Port Henry. I also give lessons on pen making. You can email your reply to

Welcome Ralph, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

By the way, you mention that you're not particularly "invested" in the craft as yet. Consider this fair warning that there's a real possibility you will be a pen addict soon. Real soon.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome to the forum! I appreciate the advice and tips about the library and its tutorials. Hopefully I can post a picture of my first pen in the not too distant future.
Ralph
