Hello all from Engaland!

Are there many international members here?

I am fairly new to wood turning and have just bought a pen mandrel and pen kit 2 weeks ago so I am very new to pen turning.

I am now up to 7: 1 ?wood (too soft anyway!), 1 Zebrano, 1 American Walnut and 4 in various Corian colours. Up to now, I am quite pleased with the results but have only done 'slim line' pens as yet. Any ideas as to the next step or style?

I have finished in sanding sealer then CA on the wooden blanks and down to 12000 grit and then car polish on the Corian and it shines like glass so I'm pleased with that but any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Martin.

Time to have a look around the site...

Hey Martin,

Welcome from Arkansas!

If your happy with your CA finish after 7 pens, your way ahead of the game.

As for what to try next. I'd suggest either the Jr. Gent 1, cigar, or sierra. All of them are pretty easy, and are available from a variety of vendors, at reasonable prices.

Welcome from Alabama

Enjoy and a goodly number are international members and experts. So pull up a chair and a glass. :)

Welcome Martin from Hampton, VA. I was stationed at NAF Mildenhall in 1980 when I was in the Navy. I'm knew to pen turning as well.

Welcome from Minnesota. Icebox of the nation. Summer is gone and soon the lakes will freeze and the we can go ice fishing and enjoy the next 6 months.

I hope that fall goes into Dec.

Welcome from sunny Florida. Lots of good people on this sight from your part of the world.
I like to turn euro style pens with the tenon. That was my second pen after the slim line. They go well for me. Others say they are a bid difficult. They are two different sizes on the pen barrel. Very sharp tool and magnifier when I cut the tenon. Light touch or they go out of round. The trick is to taper them slightly toward the top of the band end. Test fit it several times and sneak up on the diameter you need. Then fniish the diameter of the cut the same size.

Hi Martin, and welcome.

Hello from Pine Island Texas, Martin and welcome. We all started some time, so we know how it is. Just remember, we are not making writing instruments, we are creating art.
I would suggest you make some bolt action pens next. Only one barrel to turn, only 3 parts to press together and it sells twice as many as all the other 10 or so types of pens I make together, at least in my part of Texas.

Ol' Corky
