I have had the exact same problem with my Niels niche tools tap holder and cannot seem to tap straight, which leads to lots of extra work and sections and caps that are always slightly off, been a huge frustration. Thanks for the lead!Tolerance stack up of the v holders vs concentric lock up of an er32.
When I spin the Niels you see the tap is off axis. When I spin the er32 it's on axis.
Sorry I can never get videos to work so I included stills.
You can see in the Niels it's tilted to the right.
It is so worth it. I've been making kitless since 2016 and this has been a game changer. I now only use the Niels for taping bottle stoppers.I have had the exact same problem with my Niels niche tools tap holder and cannot seem to tap straight, which leads to lots of extra work and sections and caps that are always slightly off, been a huge frustration. I have the same issue with basically all tap holders. what i've found is that a conventional tap wrench/holder, with a spring-loaded tap follower, makes for very concentric tapping. The pilot hole will guide the tap (as long as it's not a bottoming tap) and the spring-loaded follower pushes it through. I do all of my body tapping under power now and it's perfect. for tapping sections i just rotate the spindle and the tap gets pushed in. for tapping caps i just chuck the tap in my drill chuckI have had the exact same problem with my Niels niche tools tap holder and cannot seem to tap straight, which leads to lots of extra work and sections and caps that are always slightly off, been a huge frustration. All my taps have cylindrical bodies that have machined square flats. I just hold them by the larger cylinder using the ER32 HOLDER.I have the same issue with basically all tap holders. what i've found is that a conventional tap wrench/holder, with a spring-loaded tap follower, makes for very concentric tapping. that being said @RobS how does it work for taps that aren't cylindrical? my 10x1 tap has a square end but the body of it has a curve - so i'd be wary of loading my tap in a collet as it will only grip the widest part. Maybe i just need a new tap, haha!
