Just getting started on new display trays for pens. I'm making 12, enough for 144 pens. I've made similar ones, but I made them too wide and not enough space between pens. They should fit three deep on a standard craft show table. These inserts were made from 1 1/4 pine with a cove routed on each side and then sliced off. I decided on a final length of 6 inches. Twelve are glued together on a backer board and then flocked a charcoal gray. Next step is to make all the boxes for them to fit into, probably 1 1/2 deep so the pens won't slide off easily. Thinking I'll make those out of maple.

Very professional looking - the flocking adds a nice backdrop for your pens. How did you set up your router to index each groove?

I really like what you are doing here Ken!

Are they going to be boxes (w/lid) or trays (open top)? If trays, you might want to think about keying them so that the sticks down past the sides a little bit so that they stack and stay stacked.

Can't wait to see the end product!

No lids and I've been debating whether to key them or not.

Gross! Sorry, I couldn't resist.

They look really nice and will certainly be sturdier than anything I have seen available for purchase.

I have thought about making some with fabric and expanding foam using a form, but I'm not super motivated since I don't do shows. There's a thought for someone, though.
