Hi everyone! My name is Bob from Virginia, and I turned my first pen last year at a woodworking show. Since then I have turned many more, bought a small Jet lathe then later bought a larger Jet Lathe. Needless to say I'm hooked on turning. While I started out on pens I have now done lost of other stuff and my favorite is segmented turning. I still return to the pens after my wife gives a few for gifts. I hope to get lost of ideas from this forum.

Welcome Bob. You've come to the right place for advice or opinions. I've enjoyed reading the postings and response to postings. I am constantly amazed at the talent that is on this forum and how turnings come out by the members.

A self taught pen turner myself. I did my first ever turn of a pen at the Winter Woodworking show in Indianapolis two years ago also! Welcome from soggy Southern Indiana. May you have many good turns in life!

Welcome Bob, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/articles/2009/Getting_started_in_penturning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
