I've got a burl that I need cut up. It's to big for my bandsaw. 've cut a few slices with a hand saw and I'm getting slightly tired of cutting it that way. Can anyone give me suggestions where to look to get something like that cut up.

Well, if we weren't so far apart, I'd offer to mill it for you. Have you thought about taking it to a lumber mill, or a portable sawmill service? There are lots of small operations around and I bet someone would cut it up for a nominal fee.

Regards,
Eric

I'm too far or I'd do it for you. If you can't find a member, call around to your local
cabinet shops. They're often quite helpful and not adverse to assisting other woodworkers.

Roy, if I can't get anything done here close to home I might give you a call.

Gary, I hadn't thought about talking to a cabinet shop. I've got one here about a mile away. I'll call them on Monday.

I called a guy that owns a portable sawmill and he said he doesn't deal with things this small. I wasn't wanting to use a chainsaw because I thought the waste would be to high. I don't think this burl will yeild very many quality blanks, so I'd like to save as much as possible. Using the hand saw has had good results, but dang, my arms are starting to look like Popeye's arms.

Here are some photos of what I've got, it's Redbud burl:

Check with the local Woodcraft and see if their shop setup has a large bandsaw setup fo demos.

Otherwise, the cabinet shop idea is a good choice. Stay away from uning the bandsaw as it definitely will have a large waste factor. Good luck!

Do you have any local woodworking clubs or woodcraft stores in your area thay may have a big bandsaw for you to use. I know in my area of Florida, there are a few clubs with large equipment. Try some of the local carpentry shops which do custom work like doors, mantles etc., they usually have good size tools. Explain your situation and bring some samples of your work.. Who knows they may be your next customer. It has worked for me.
Good luck.
Cris.
