there is nothing unusual about being able to read it. the mind only reads the first and last letters of a word. As long as the first and last letters are in place, the rest of the letters can be anywhere

For most people with normally developed brains, we read by clumping groups of words together, not just the first and last letters. That's why you'll sometimes read a page and then wonder what you read. It's hard to get your brain to slow down to read each individual word on the page. Which is why we teach students that the best way to find spelling errors (when not using a Spell Checker AKA "Cav") is to read their paper backwards. By reading the paper backwards you are "forcing" your brain to look at each individual word.

I have a perfect example that demonstrates what I'm talking about. I'll find it when I go to the university tomorrow.

After participating in on-line forums for a while, reading something like that is a snap. That is how many people write. Never ceases to amaze me at how poorly some people spell. And, doubly amazes me that they are too lazy to use the spell checker. Another forum, a new member is asking questions about "terning". He makes the same error frequently so it is not a typo. If he can read, I would think, he would see the word is "turning". Oh, well.

I could read it out loud at normal talking speed. I have always been interested in this sort of thing. There used to be one that was going around that had you count the f's in a paragraph. most people would come up with 7. You then told them there where 11 and they could find them all. it has to do with our mind hearing the v sound in the word of. there is also a spot in the middle of your vision that is a blind spot. your mind fills this space in with what it expects should be there. the mind is a powerful and little understood thing.

Gee Al,

This would constitute a very small percentage of the membership ;)

I've been drain bamaged evr since my momma droppen me on my haid as a baby. :D

I think the key is that the words contain all the letters from the original word - if you start adding words with spelling mistakes, it becomes much harder to read.

Dmot ylu tyuok so? Don't you think so...much harder to read!

I think it's a case of predicting - if you have a good idea of what should be next, your mind can fill in the gaps!

And I doubt that only 55 out of 100 can read that - I think that's one of those email tricks to make people feel special! :)

I find the paragraph easy to read. What gets my dander up is when folks use the word "you're" (you are) in place of "your", as in, "Is that your daughter over there in your yard?" Looks stupid when written, "Is that you're daughter over there in you're yard?"

There is a difference in the meaning of both words. No wonder folks are sometimes harder to understand. ;)

Doesn't matter. There is a place for colloquialisms and dialects in the spoken word in America. However, a few can be confusing. e.g. "Youse" or "Youse guys". Some attribute the use to the east, as in New Joisey. ;) Others to the deep south.

I don't think I ever heard "youse" or "youse guys" down in the south.. we use "y'all" and "all y'all".
I did hear a guy in the Navy who was from Colorado use the terms.. I think "youse" is singular and "youse guys" is plural.. kind of like.. "y'all" is singular in the south and "all y'all" is plural[}:)]
