I was listening to the radio this morning and a distinctly Irish/Scottish a Capella song came on. I recognize it, as it's pretty famous I think, but I haven't a clue what it's called.

Anyone have any ideas? part of the song isn't words at all, at least not english.

Possible?

As I was a-walkin round Kilgary Mountain
I met Colonel Pepper and his money he was countin',
I rattled me pistols and I drew forth me saber,
Sayin' "Stand and deliver, for I am the bold deceiver!"
Musha rig um du rum da, / Whack fol the daddy O,
Whack fol the daddy O, / There's whiskey in the jar

and btw, the version by Thin Lizzy is pretty cool..........

Could it possibly have been Sleepy Maggie by Ashley MacIsaac? That song features Scottish Gaelic vocals by Mary Jane Lamond. It could also have been something by Capercaille, who infuse Gaelic throughout their songs.

this was a male voice. No music at all, just a man singing the tune.

Wish I could remember some words, but it was 30 past the hour of doom when I heard it. 5:30AM

"Aye, lad I don't know where ye been, but I see ye won first prize!"

Love that song. That was going to be my guess until I read that you'd found it.

or Thin Lizzy or Ronnie Drews, Whiskey in the Jar

Do you know if Ronnie Drew is still alive?? Someone told me he had died.
I used to see the Dubliners for many years, but left for the USA in 1996. I met Ronnie in the late nineties here in the States at a small Irish function. We talked for quite a bit and I had him sign photos I took in the mid 80's - stage shots. What a great guy he is/was.

The Scotsman

By: Bryan Bowers

Well, a Scotsman clad in kilt left a bar one evening fair,
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share.
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet,
And he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

Chorus: Ring ding diddle iddle ay dee oh,
Ring di diddly ay oh,
(repeat last line of previous verse)

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by,
One says to the other with a twinkle in her eye:
"See yon sleeping Scotsman, so strong and handsome built?
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt!"

(Chorus)

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be;
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see.
And there, behold, for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt,
Was nothin' more than God had graced him with upon his birth.

(Chorus)

They marveled for a moment, then one said: "We must be gone.
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along."
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow,
Around the bonnie star the Scot's kilt did lift and show.

(Chorus)

Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call, and stumbled towards the trees.
Behind the bush he lifts his kilt, and gawks at what he sees.
And in a startled voice he says, to what's before his eyes,
"Oh, lad I don't know where ye been, but I see ye won first prize!"
