Hi all,

I am looking for a bit of help. Was looking for some suggetstions on a pen/pencil set. I want to make a set to present to a female friend, and am having trouble figuring out just the right kit. Not really wanting to do the slim line's. Want something a little better than that. I welcome any and all suggestions! thanks

The problem with a pen/pencil set is finding a pencil that will work reliably. Personably I'm starting to think it is the impossible dream. CSUSA has a Jr. Gent style kit but I can't speak to it's reliability as I haven't tried one.

I know a lot of members here dont like the slimline pencils, however i have made several pen and pencil sets and have given all of them away as gifts. I have shown everyone how to replace the lead and the erasers in them and have not had any complaints yet. This is the 2nd year that i have done this. I have one that i use alot myself and it has held up good. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have found out that women like a smaller pen.

I just presented my son and daughters music teacher with a Wall St II in copper p&p set. She loves it. At least she says she does...

She's had it for a little over a week, and sent a thank you note saying she is using it everyday at school.

Try the PSI Polaris sets.

The best pencil mechs IMO are Pentel's there are a couple of guys on here who sell the mandrel and bushings to make it. I would encourage you to look at those. The next best is any kit with the schimdt mech. But I would stick with the pentel if at all possible.

I made a set from the Sierra And Serra click pen. I used black chrome plating with black acrylic I have been using them for 8-9 months and had NO problems.

I have made the following pen and pencil kits with no problem: Polaris, Sierra and the Jr. Gent. They have all worked well and everyone uses them regularly. If the persons hands are small either of these will work well. You could also so a slimline set, but make them larger by making your own center band or using no center band.

I definately agree with Hans here. The pentel mech is by far the best, most reliable and easiest to load mech out there. It is not easy to make one that is a cosmetic match for any of the pen kits out there. It can be done, but it usually involves sacrificing a pen kit and then fabricating the body for the pencil.

The next best option is the schmidt insert. In theory it will replace the parker refill in any pen kit that uses one. In practice it usually requires a little tweaking to get it to work in a particular kit, and it's not the easiest thing to refill. You usually lose the option for an eraser with this one as well, unless you can fabricate something. But this is the best option if you want the pair to be exactly identical.

A third option is to modify a screw cap roller ball pen to take the schmidt insert. I posted that particular adventure here.
