Having a problem with a web page. It worked before. All I did (I think) was add a few lines of text and change the name of the file. It shows up and is viewable from my root directory, but when I try to view with FF or IE, I get a page not found error, HTTP 404 - File not found.
What could be wrong?????[?][?][?][?][?]

Mannie,
Too many "it's"; need to be more specific.
Can you post the relevant source of the changed page?

Also, before editing any page, copy the old page and save it as <originalName_backup>.<ext>. When things don't work for the new changes, you can run diff and see what's up or show us what's been altered.

The file name is simple alpha characters, nothing weird. I even went back and renamed it several times and get the same error. Every other file in the root directory works OK. My operating system is XP.
Gonna shut it down for tonight. If anyone can spare a few minutes minutes some time tomorrow, send me your phone number and I'll give you a call.

Clear the cache in your browser - it might still be trying to load the old file name.

Cheers.

This is supposed to be the link to the page for the next box buy -
http://woodenwonderstx.com/Febboxbuy.html
Still getting the page not found error. I've cleared the cache (I think) and increased the cache space from 50 to 100 mb. I can copy and paste the html extension from any other file in my directory to the woodenwonderstx.com/ in the browser bar and that page will come up, but when I cut and paste Febboxbuy.html I get the error.

Send me an email, and I can try to help more - my guess is a permissions or virtual directory problem on your hosting side (EIG??). Since you home directory bounces you into another directory (WWBlue), do you need to put this file into that directory too?

There are a lot of good suggestions in prior posts. I'll add a couple; I would try these in sequence.

1) It could be a problem with the permissions on your file. If you are using a FTP client to post updates to the website, compare the permissions on a file that is working with the one that isn't working.

2) There is a cache in your browser, and depending on the webserver, there might be a cache on your server. However, a cache issue usually doesn't show up as a 404 error. But to rule out a cache problem, rename your non-working .html file to a new name (a name that you have never used before) and try that new link in your browser. If this works, don't forget to update any pages that link to your new file.

Mannie, THis may be one fo those make sure the tv is plugged in type answers, I am not sure as I manage to get by when it comes to making web pages. I have had problem in the past with photos. the URL gets written to look for it in "My Documents" make sure the page you uploaded did not get changed to look on your computer for the file. this happens to me without me making the changes, doing something simple like changing a line of text but when I save the page all the photo urls are pointing to my documents again. I clicked your link and got the error also. I don't remember this ever happening with an entire page.

Of course, if you do this, you'll lose traffic directed from search engines until the search engines re-index the page under its new file name - unless you also keep the old file on the server.

Cheers.

Well, a big <h1>DUHHHH</h1>from me.
I want to thank everyone for their help and suggestions, but none of them worked. It seems the problem is that my host just finished up grading and migrated my site to a new server. I was trying to do the changes from the old server. Now that I went to the new server and uploaded the page http://woodenwonderstx.com/FebBoxBuy.html
<h1>TA-DAH</h1> it works.
Again, thanks everyone for the suggestions.
FYI, the rush was to get the page up for a box buy here;

Great!

I wouldn't beat yourself up too much - for anyone who has done website work, I'd be willing to bet they have had a few DUHs themselves. I know I have. :D:D

Wow.. wouldn't have ever thought of that one... Usually they put a message on the old server, letting you know you're logged into the 'old' box. Glad you got it working.

Well at least it wasn't as bad as the T.V. being unplugged. more like tryint to fix the T.V. by tinkering with the toaster though.;)

Definitely don't beat yourself up over this. My provider changed my pop email access address and didn't bother to tell anyone. They dropped the city extension off and no one could get email for awhile... and they wondered why people got upset.
