I have a Canon DSLR Rebel and the door that covers the compact flash memory card will not stay shut. Instead of the positive closure and locking into place, it now loosely slides over the card but will not stay closed and the camera will not poser up if the door is not closed snugly and tight. Canon wants $211 + actual repair charges to repair it. They recondition all digital cameras to factory specs along with the repairs. Heck, this repair will end up costing me half of a new camera. They will not just fix the door and not recondition. There are no independent service centers for DSLR Rebels.

If someone could take a close up picture of the door open on a DSLR Rebel for me to compare it to mine, maybe I can figure out what is wrong. It looks as though there is nothing broken...but something is either missing or out of alignment. Any help would be appreciated.

That's a bummer but typical of the state of things with plastic body P&S digi cams today. I had my Sony break down and they wanted aprox. 50% of new price to repair also. The companies don't care what the repair is, everything is just R&R or toss and ship back another camera. Sadly, if you are out of warranty, you are 'bleeped'. You might try rigging up a Velcro holder for that door. Good luck.

Don,

Can't you make a trip to a local Circuit City, Best Buy, Target or Walmart to check if they have one you can look at? Just an idea since anyone who have it may not have another camera to use to take the pic.

DUH! Thanks Dario...I should have thought of that. Only problem is mine is the model just before the XT and is no longer available. Maybe they didn't change the door covering the flash card. I can continue to use a rubberband...I can buy a lot of them for the repair cost. I'll take a look today.

Don,

Many of these items have user manuals on-line. Sometimes they have detailed "construction drawings". Have you looked at your user manual???

Yes, I KNOW you are a guy, but you're getting close to "When all else fails, read the instructions!!"

You're right Ed, it's time to take a look at the manual and search for something online. I've searched the DSLR Rebel forums that I know about and can't seem to find anyone with a similar problem. Do I need any special training to "read some manuals" or will it come naturally once I start?[:D]

I'm told the manual reading is not too painful.

I have rarely had to do so myself, so I can only offer conjecture!!!

Best of luck!!![:D][:D][:D][:D]

I had a similar problem w/ a Kodak camera and what was causing my issue was the SD card. The little tab on the care was pushed down to lock and was causing just enough of a hang up that I thought my little door was broken because it wouldn't close. I flicked the tab to unlock on the SD card and now my door closes fine. It might not be even close to your issue but I just thought I'd meniton it since it was something so odd.

Yea, they build them cheap now.. I have a digi hanging from my wrist about 5 hours a day for work and I work them HARD! I just picked up my 4th camera since Dec 04 (feels better when they are company owner) [:D]

We got these Olympus cameras that are water & shock proof (30ft-6ft)So far I really like it, we shall see how it holds up to our abuse we give them. It's not easy holding a clip board, camera, pen, umbrella and trying to inspect damages to a car without dropping stuff every now and then!

I had another thought. Two in one day for me, that's pretty good. [:D] If you use your USB cord to download pictures off the camera and your SD card is big enough for your needs, there is no reason to ever open that door again. The duct tape or even glue solution will work for you. Seal it and forget it.

I feel for ya, I have a HP that the battery door keeps popping open at the worse time. It's just the way things are made today, sad to say.... I use packing tape

I guess I should have been more specific in asking my question. There is no need to re-quote what had already been said.

Is your model any of the following, or some other model?

REBEL EOS 300D
EOS REBEL TI
EOS REBEL XS
EOS REBEL 2000
EOS REBEL G2
EOS REBEL G
EOS REBEL II
EOS RBEEL X
