Anyone use non translucent pigment with PR? I have been selling the heck out of a pen that I have named "The Price of Freedom". It is a cartridge pen that has a top that is stacked with 13 red and white corian stripes with a piece of corian cobalt glued to half of the first 7 stripes to give the representation of our flag. My problem is finding the red which has been Corian "Hot". The smallest piece I can get from my supplier (I own a commercial cabinet company) is a 30" x 72" for the low price of $267. Granted I would have almost an endless supply but I am looking for another solution.

Jeff there are several opaque pigments that you can use in PR. Both powdered and liquid forms. (I find the liquids a bit easier.)

If you want to match the Corian Hot red, try the Castin Craft opaque red dye as a base. It should get you pretty close with out too much tweaking needed.

I've had pretty good luck mixing paints with PR. Maybe not quite completely opaque, but probably good enough if you paint the tubes white or black or whatever...

Oh, and he good thing about that is you can go to the store and get a sample jar mixed for 3 or 4 dollars and you can mix a custom color...

If you want the corian you can try ebay.Your other choice is that since you own a cabinet shop, you can try a top shop.I also own a cabinet shop that uses corian. But I sub out my granite tops and the company I use also does solid surface tops. They are more than happy to let me get what ever scraps they have on hand.

Jeff,

If you are in need of corian, I have a distributor locally to me. If you give me the color names and number of 4"x4"x.5" samples you desire, I may be able to help out.

Let me know.

Yea, I have got several samples from my vendors but was looking for some a little bigger because I want to rip them in thin strips on table saw and the sample size makes it a little unsafe even with a Saw Stop.

Also since I live in Columbus Ohio most of the top shops hold onto any of the red because of the Buckeyes.

exoticblanks.com sells fire engine red PR. I have some and it's totally opaque. It would be great for your pen.

Post pix of it here for us to see, ok?

I use Mixol tints. You can get them at Woodcraft and they work REALLY well!
I use it as a "base" tint and then add the "mica" stuff. When I want just an opaque color I just add a few more drops.

A really great website that has Corian "Hot" / bright red is http://solidsurface.com . Check the surplus section...they have smaller sheets than what you mentioned. There really aren't many manufacturers that make bright solid colors like that. I hope this helps! :)

Have you tried the Resin Color Library ? Although it's not terribly strong on Red recipes, it should give you a starting point. (See #89 in particular)

"I have been selling the heck out of a pen "

Why mess with it------your time is worth more than you could ever save by making you own. Your a pen maker not a resin guru.

Just my small 2 cents worth.
