I am looking for a laser fax/copier/scanner/printer all-in-one unit.

My current fax and printer works okay but the cost of ink and other consumables are too much and it will be much cheaper to buy a new one. Will also be nice to save some space having only one unit since I am using my bedroom as my temporary office.

Looks like the Canon MF4150 meets my needs for $215.00 (free shipping)

Canon MF4150

Any other all-in-one unit I should consider?

Thanks!

My opinion, for reliability for anything concerning printing - HP is still the best. May cost a bit more, but they just run like a Timex. Cheap over the long haul. The only reason I've ever replaced one is because I wanted newer features.
FWIW.

I've got a Lexmark. It works fine but the ink refills are rare and very expensive. It was dirt cheap to buy but now I think they make their money on the ink.
I used to be wary of buying multi-function machines, because often if one failed then the whole machine was useless. But they seem to be pretty reliable these days.

Why not ask Ed when he gets back, he should be able to give you a pro's recommendation.

We had a Lexmark but as skiprat said refills were expensive. I have an HP f340 works great and the cost of the refills is half that of the lexmark.

Over the years I have found HP is about as good as it gets for printers. I just bought an all in one wireless from Wal-Mart for less than $100. Also If you have a Walgreens they refill ink for much less than you can buy new refills.

I use an HP 3050 in my office and have never had any problems with it. I agree with the others who say HP HP HP...you really can't go far wrong.

We have an almost-new HP Office Jet Pro L7580 that is great. Got it at Office Max, and it works like a charm. IIRC, it was right at $300.00.

You can NOT go wrong with HP - they are the gold standard for printers, as far as I am concerned.

Jon,

Care to check for me if it really is a "hummer"?

It will be sitting next to my bed...and I don't want to loose sleep because of it (if you know what I mean). Can't find any other location for it right now.

Thanks [:)]

Dario, we have the HP 3310 all in one. It is not a laser. It works great until we want to print an envelope. Unless the envelope is a standard size that is programed in the printer it sucks big time. HP claims it will print any envelope. If you are going to print envelopes, check it out before opting for the HP.
We mostly print pictures with it and for that it is great.
Good luck
Ellis

HP may have changed, but I purchased one of thier early "home" multifunction printers (7 years ago) and with the first paperjam it broke a couple of plastic tabs. After that it would not eject paper. HP said it was not covered as it was caused by a paper jam. I was out $500 after 2 mths. I have not purchased one since. I also have a lexmark and although the ink is hard to find, it works well. A trick is to turn it off so it does not clean the ink every day. You save a lot of ink that way.

I also have a canon that we use for general printing. It works great, but not multifunctional.

Maybe HP has changed...?

It sits about 2 feet from my left ear and I have never noticed it even being on. It is silent unless printing.

Staples has them remanufactured for $219 or new for $298.

I have the MP530 and I love it. I think it runs abour $180. One of the big things I wanted was separate ink cartridges since with the HP's we've had you had to replace all colors when one ran out. With the canons (at least the 530 and 830) you have 5 cartridges, so you only change the one that needs changing.

I tested ours by printing some photoes on some free glassy paper. came out outstanding. I also like the fact that the 530 has a document feeder so you can fax/copy/scan multipage docs without lifting the lid all the time.

Hello Dario,

I have the Brother DCP-7020 Laser Printer/Copier/Scanner, this model doesn't have the fax as I didn't need it as we (The boss and I) prefer the scan and email method, than a fax. This produces a copy that blows the doors off of any fax, as you can see original colours etc. The Brother also has one with a fax if needed but it is a little more. I picked up this one for about$130.00 Canadian, so it should be even less down there. I have been using it for almost 2 years without a problem, it scans, prints and copies just great, and when it is is standby it doesn't make a sound. It does have a small fan to cool it down when being used a lot, but it makes no sound either, and I have never seen it come on when in stand-by mode. Take a look at them, Brother has made me a believer in their printers etc.

I'm late coming to this post but I am recommending the HP L7580 that Nancy mentioned. I have 2 at work and will be purchasing a 3rd for work and I'm getting one for myself.

This uses a new style of printer/ink cartridge. It has 4 cartridges and HP has brought the cost of ink cartridges down to almost the level of high capacity toner cartridges. By the way, I have seen reports that 70% of HP's profits last year were from ink sales.

One of the things that impresses me about this machine (besides the ink) is the speed of printing.

It also has a built in ethernet port for attaching to your small business LAN without purchasing a separate print server.

I like the type of rollers that were used in this machine.
I see them at Office Depot and Staples for about $250 now.
There are 3 in this series and this is the first. If you want to know what you get for more money with the others, PM me.

We had a lexmark at my work, and it stopped printing black, which made the whole thing worthless, finally bought a scanner and printer. And use the lexmark as the out going fax machine

I have had Canon and HP several of both and both were JUNK
Go for the Brother they are cheap to operate and just keep going. You cant do better for a fax than a Brother

Let me add this.
I think with all printers, you get what you pay for.
Cheap printers are simply a delivery system for the payload...ink.
When they stop working, what are you going to do? If it lasts for a year, you go buy another and maybe the same brand. It's cheap, no problem.
As you go up in price, you start getting more replaceable parts. For example, the venerable HP 4000. Virtually every part in it is replaceable and you can still find parts. Same is true for the other higher end products by other manufacturers. We've got a Canon (industrial) fax at work. That thing is fantastic. It keeps going and going...
When you hit a million copies, you feel pretty good about your investment.

I had a good talk about this while purchasing my AIO (all in one) unit with the salesman. The general consensus is that most (if not all) products seemed to have leveled quality wise. The lower end went up and the higher end went down....due to the fact that most are now made in China.

There is also a conspiracy theory that the ones who built theirs like tanks (like HP) realized they need to make theirs break after a while too so as to make another sale later. I doubt the later since they usually almost giveaway the units and make money on the consumables later.

I did check all units that was suggested but ended buying the Canon MF4150 still. I found a deal at Staples that is too good to pass up. Canon MF4150 for $169.98 (after $50.00 mail in rebate and a $30.00 instant coupon). The only catch, thought I paid in the store, it was an "online" purchase (to avail the $30.00 off) so I have to wait for the unit to be delivered on Tuesday. I did add a 2 year extended warranty for it too.

Thank you guys!

After two Lexmarks, I settled some three/four years ago on an Epson Stylus CX5400. Cartridges I buy the cheap ones from here:

So far, I had no problem. My Lexmarks (both) had leaking cartridges and it was a total mess - they were original cartridges, though....
