I have offered to make a guestbook pen and pen holder for my neice's upcoming wedding and I'm wondering if any of you have made something like this, or have any ideas for an appropriate pen for this occasion.

I have been asked if I can make them from something of an Ivory color to go with the rest of the wedding. I was thinking of maybe using Tru Stone, Corian or perhaps acrylic, but I'm open to any ideas.

I was thinking that it might be nice if the pen if the pen could be modified or make extra, less formal parts ( or maybe not ) to be used on their desk after the wedding.

Thanks,
Mark

I did this one for our nephew's wedding last October. It's a Sierra Elegant Beauty in gold and black platinum with a white blank. The tube was painted white and attached to the blank with thick CA. I tried using epoxy to attach the tube to the blank but that resulted in a slight brown discoloration on parts of the blank. The writing is a clear label that was attached to the blank after turning and then covered with a clear coat of rattle can lacquer, 4 coats of thin CA and 8 coats of med CA. I used lacquer to ensure that the ink on the label did not run. It was then mm'd to 12,000 and polished with Hut's polish. Everyone, including the Minister could not say enough about the choice of style of the pen.

Do a search here and use combination of words for wedding pens and you will get a ton of hits. Many have done them and they usually consist of white blank with engraving. A beautiful blank which is a white pearled blank that I have not seen matched is called Snow White and Woodcraft sells it. Beautiful blank. They also have a cream colored that is great too but I forgot the name. Never can go wrong with those colored blanks for sure. Engrave the brides and grooms name and you are set. Oh one other thing tie a chain around it because it may walk.

I made a wedding pen for my sister in law, it was a Majestic Jr. with alternative ivory from Ed at Exotic blanks. I had the bride and groom's names with date laser engraved, it was a really sharp and classy pen. I didn't have to make a holder so I don't have any ideas for that.

I have done several wedding guest book pens and the one thing they have in common is they are all very different. My first step is ALWAYS find out from the bride and groom, ok bride, what her ideas are. Does she want glitzy and feathers, does she want it engraved with names or a more simple elegance? Does she want white or matching wedding colors?

Some of the more popular pens have been simple truestone in the wedding colors, or white or mother of pearl. I would stay away from fountain pens because people not used to fountain pens can make a big mess in the guest book. I like the majestic jr or jr statesman but the design should be inline with what the couple wants.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I do need to get with the Bride and try to narrow down what she wants but I wanted to have some ideas before I met with her.

I checked out the Alternative Ivory at Exotic blanks. That may be a good option especially since I can get pen blanks as well as a 1.75" x 2.93" x 1.75" bar that might work for the base.

Does the Alternative Ivory turn well?

I made this one for my wedding! Its a Jr. Statesman with Rhodium plating. The lower barrel I casted using a Sangria colored label and the stamp from our invitations that were custom made with our picture on it. The upper barrel is also cast in resin with our names and wedding date below it. I thought about a holder for it, but then realized that most people may not even use it and then the pen ends up being set on the guestbook, so what was the point. Your options are endless!

I have made a couple wedding sets with the Alternative Ivory from Exotic Blanks as well as several pens including some kitless pens . It turns like a dream , takes threads well and has a wonderful look and feel when finished . If your looking to make a desk pen , I would suggest doing something like a Russ-line (Father Sing) style pen and either make or buy a funnel for the base . It will make a great guestbook pen as well as a regular desk pen for doing the bills from the wedding :smile:

I have only been turning for a few months and I have not turned any resins yet. I have seen many pictures of resin pens on this site and I'm looking forward to trying it.
