Anyone out there know how or if its possible to take "block art" and convert it to "line art".

Block art being all black or parts are black (example the IAP letters) and convert those to lined. For those that laser engrave I am looking to basically have outlined art work.

I know I am not using the proper terms probably.

I will post some examples from home tonight.

I have Corel 12 suit. I think I know what might need to be done....but don't know how to explain it. If you want, you can email me the art work and I'll see what I can do with it. Then I'll let you know the process I took. (that is if I can do it).

Jon

(just PM me here for my email)

Seems to me that there is a trace function built into both of those packages somewhere. In Photoshop Elements I can apply filters that will give me a 'line' effect.

Cav I got past the crayon to full lead artist pencils. Still working on a straight line though.

Jon I will post one and if you want me to send it as well just let me know. I know there is a trace function with CorelDraw X3 but I am unsure if I am doing it right.

Bo that site will work great to clean up some images I have that were not scanned with a good scanner. But I need outlines, imagine the gears with just black outlines and no color, but with more artwork not as simple.

Marc I will look at the photoshop and see if I can figure out the trace function there.

Not sure what you're looking for, is it something like (in Photoshop 7.0)
Filter, Stylize, Find Edges ?

If you do it in a color image, you'll get colored edges.
But you can always reduce the colors to black and white when you're done.

The function you are looking for is called "Trace" Under X3, search for "trace" in the help, or if you are working with a bitmap, click on the "trace" button, or click the "bitmap" drop-down menu and select "trace". You'll then be presented with a multitude of options to control the trace, and several pre-canned filters including "line-art", and "logo" (which I've also found works pretty well).

The result is sometimes a little weird for laser engraving, because Corel Draw seems to duplicate the objects - some judicious deletion may be in order.

Regards,
Eric

Eric I have used the bitmap trace, but how do I get it to keep the "black" parts from coming back to the main picture? Here is a simple example of something, it only has a couple black parts.

Tom is it something like this you are after??

LINE.jpg

If it is you should be able to do it in photoshop by.

Use the Magic wand tool (W) and select all the blockwork you require.
Then go to, Select -> Modify-> Border and use about 4 pixels (or whatever you feel is right)

Create a new blank document and drag the selection from the original to the new one.

What you should have now is a set of double row of marching ants for each letter.
Select the paint bucket (Fill) tool and with a dark colour selected, fill in between the lines and you should have your line art.

The one above was just done now on CS3, but i think you should still have all the correct tools in version 6/7.

Hope this is what you are after
