Dario,
No don't know the origin,it has a little more of a red cast to it than my picture shows, not much but slightly on my screen.

Roy,

From what I see, it could be any of numerous possibilities but my first guess is maple.

Do you know the origin?

I agree with the masses looks like maple burl, but maybe its cherry as mentioned. Turn a small barrel of it and put a finish on it then post a pic, these guys will know for sure then. Good Luck, Victor

Doc, Even Cav thinks I'm a lost:( cause when it comes to spelling, I look at my DL to see how to spell my name at times."Appreciate" your warning.BTW I can spell drivers it's that other word that gives me fits:D;).

Edited for spelling

I'm wondering if it might be Big Leaf Maple Burl ..... but, I could be wrong.

BTW Roy ...be ready for the IAP Spelling Police (as in Cav) to get on you). ;)

Roy could I get a better shot of bark? I would have to say I so far agree with everyone about maple.

As a plastic guy, I can say with certainty, "It came from a TREE!!"

No charge for that insight!

I also woulda guessed cherry.

I also was leaning in that direction but wanted expert opinions, now for the hard part would you think a large TREE or a small TREE?

Well guys I think I am going to offer a different direction. It sure looks like it might be either white oak or water oak burl by looking at the bark and the burl section. I don't know if came from your local area, Roy, but it looks like some of the water oak burl I have recently acquired from a local sawmill. He also had a fairly large slab of white oak burl, but it didn't have a pinkish cast while the water oak did. It could be from post oak, but that would probably be even redder looking than the water oak. Just my opinion

Rob

Roy, I'm not going to be much help on this, but I've got about 1-1/2 tons of maple laying out behind my shop and it doesn't look anything like yours... mine isn't a burl though..and it's pretty light colored with no pink tones. Looks like you've had some woodpecker action in the bark... may have some beetle action in there was well.
