Hi group. This is as casual as it gets. I need two belts to replace old used, disintegrating, stretched, hardened for my old Hickory lathe.
Here's the deal, I've tried sewing machine and vacumn repair stores and called a couple places but it turned out they were industrial belt sales.
The belts are for variable speed and are approximately 16" in length. The top of the belt is about 3/16" wide, the bottom of the Vee is about 1/8" wide and the belt is about 3/16" deep. The belt has teeth on the bottom where it contacts the pulleys, I'm told it needs this because of the variable speed. This was purchased from The Woodworkers Choice in West Jefferson, NC and the shipping order lists it as PN 04710.
I really need these cause if I can't fix the lathe I'll have to get a new one;).
Thanks, Vern

Verne. An auto parts store should have what you need. Have you got a NAPA close. But make SURE they are both in the same sleeve. They have to be matched & the belt number does NOT mean they are matched. A lot of the older cars used that notched belt but they are still available. But I don't think it has a thing to do with ver. speed. My lathe has a smooth belt & it's V.S. You can use the same, just length & matched is most important.

There are exceptions, of course, but by-and-large, the purpose of the notches in the belts is to facilitate tight radii around the pulley without unduly deforming the sides and back of the belt. Exceptions would be when the pulley is itself notched.

Verne,
You're close enough you could even run over to Lafayette.. I think its about a 4 hour drive from downtown Houston.

Back when I was still working in Houston (near La Porte) and we were still house hunting in Tennessee, we would leave from my office after work and stop for dinner and usually the night in Lafayette.

Chuck, before the gas prices I would have considered that as a day trip...but... the wife likes the blue dogs and I can't take her close to that town. Anyway, gunna take a picture and send to belts for anything and see what they can come up with. Thanks for all the suggestions, NAPA and other auto parts stores will be visited tomorrow.

As advised, the obvious solution is to take the old one to an auto parts store and match up size. If you want the very best belt possible. I have been told, by someone who knows, the most durable belts are used on industrial air compressors. You might have to shop manufacturing/industrial suppliers to find them. And the prices will be high. But they will last and last and last.

To all that offered suggestions-ta dah!- and the winner is (drum roll), Mike for the belts for anything.com in Layfeyette (sp) LA. They are certainly the nicest people and work really hard to come up with something acceptable. They had to make some calls, two days later they called me to tell me they had found some, then a few days later called and confirmed that they had them and two days later I had them installed. So put this in your grey matter The Belt Shop! Good people.
Now!!!!! What to use to remove CA dried on finished pen. Used to use a liquid that BB had but now all that is available is "debonder"...ucky stuff and no good for removing a little "over glue". Suggestions anyone.
As usual, Thanks for being there,
Vern

Glad it worked for you Vern. Like I said, if they can't help you then you ain't gonna find one. Not to mention how nice they are. :)

Mike

Eric and Redfish...thanks for the suggestion...save yourself some time and call the belt shop. I did try all, and I mean all the other guys i.e.; Gates, Standard Auto, Pepboys, Autozone, O'Reilleys, lawnmower, sewing machine, vacumn cleaner, etc. Some wouldn't even give me the time of day such as Gates and a couple of the BIG boys I called. Thanks Bob, maybe my acetone has gone bad, think I'll try SHMBO nail polish remover and then go buy some new acetone.
Thanks all,
Venr
