I have a working, but old 850 watt above the cook top microwave.
Can I upgrade this to a 1000 watt by changing out the Magnetron only or do I need the transformer & capacitor too? I have found an open, but damaged same brand unit @ a local scratch & dent store for $ 150!

Hi John,

I'd be leery of putting a higher power tube on the same transformer/cap. The worst it could do is smoke the transformer and burn down the house...

But if you can fit all the 1000 watt pieces in your old cabinet, that should work.

Unrelated note: plan to swing by the IAP meet at Woodcraft Saturday March 6th. Some bozo is going to do a demo on celtic knots.

I think I would try a total swap if thats what you want but watch that cap!!!! may want to discharge before tinkering.

For sure about discharging the cap. Remember that from from electronic class in the Air Force. Didn't sudy microwave though.......
