I have had a request from the wifee that I make a FP for my sister-in-law's college graduation. She is graduating from Duquesne University. Their colors are red and blue. My question is, how to organize a pen? Blue with red engraving? Red with blue engraving? Or is there a Red/Blue double dyed stabilized blank out there that I could use? Either way it's going to be a closed-end baron FP. If I wanted to laminate or segment a pen, what woods? Padauk was my first choice, but that goes brown over time. Purple heart may not be "blue" enough. I'm in a quandry, HELP!! Her grad date is may 6.

I think Padauk is too orange to start. For red I'd recommend Bloodwood. You can get several varieties blue dyed wood from AZ Silhouette.

I'd go with bloodwood or redheart with blue color fill for the engraving. The "school colors" pens look a little "kitschy" to me.

If you're going to use Bloodwood .... make certain you specify a dark, red color. Some shades of BW are almost pink in color.
Also, with Duquesne being a Catholic University, you might want to think about one of Ron's Cross pens. Just a thought.

You could also order some of the died and stabilized blanks, I did a UM pen like this with Ken doing the laser work and it turned out fantastic. I'm not sure if this shade of blue is right but look at CSUSA's 206-9106 st. box elder burl, it really takes the blue die all the way through the wood. Thats what I used for my UM pen, that and the yellow/gold.

Hey, heres what I do for dying wood;
Just take some normal food dye, add some drops of water and apply.
Works great[:D] I don't think I'm ever gonna need to buy those dyes again, I'll just take some from the cook[:)]

Blodwood or redheart both are good for the red, if you dont already got some, I can sell you a couple blanks. -Darick
