Name this wood

I know that there are a few pf us that have used this wood for a prop for pictures from time to time, but I have never heard what type it is. Can someone please tell me, and has anyone ever made a pen from it?

It's a Manzanita root.

Thanks Jason and Richard, I should have known that. Has anyone ever made a pen from it? I did a search but didn't see any.

I made a few pens out of manzanita...even a bowl out of it.

It is very difficult to get a piece solid enough (no cracks) though. You will have to fill the cracks with CA or epoxy. I love the wood.
