Mystery Wood

Does anybody know what kind of wood this is. It is kind of a light weight wood. My neighbor thinks it is Cypress. If it is, are the "birds eye' normal in this type of wood?
I plan on making some pens and pendants with this wood.
I picked this slab up at a sale for $3.00

That is highly unusual for cypress (if that is what it is). What ever it is, you got a STEAL! You could probably sell several penblanks here for $3 each from that and still have plenty. Great find!

I would like to see a cut piece, but I bet it is Maple.

It may also be redwood. It's fairly lightweight and regularly found in burl form.

It looks very much like redwood burl. And whatever it is, I think you got a steal!

I wonder if the pic's color or light/dark are accurate. It does look like redwood
burl to me, but lighter than what I'm used to. almost looks like thuya burl from here.
