Okay, science people - 'xplain thois one to me.

I kept getting this funny feeling when I would lift my skew from the tool rest, that the skew was really heavy or something. I thought I'd been turning too long and my arm was just tired. Then I noticed that I didn't have this sensation with any other tool. Then I noticed little metal filings stuck to the end of the skew. Then I touched the skew to a small nail and it picked it up.

My Skew's become magnetized!

How'd this happen?

I've run into this when sharpening HSS tools and some lesser steal tools. It's just from the heat of sharpening. If we have a metallurgist in our midst, maybe they can explain why. You may want to buy a demagnetizer.

I can't explain how it happened but I have magnetized a gouge by sharpening it and I've magnetized a scraper by placing it on top of my lathe while it was running.

Do you use a magnet to hold your tools to the wall? Iron (the major component of most steel) is highly magnetic, and a non-magnetic piece of iron can be made magnetic by simply waving part of it over a magnet for a while. The magnetic field created by the magnet causes "parts" of the iron to migrate. I believe heat will do the same thing. The less iron in the steel (e.g., high carbon steel) the less likely it is to become magnetized (I think).

Julia,

Don't believe any of this jibberish. It's a result of your MAGNETIC personality!!!

'corse YOU could say you're just skewing around, but I wouldn't say that.[:D][:D][:D]

I do have a magnet strip on the wall and I use it to hold tools but almost never my turning tools. It just holds screwdrivers and pliers and the like. I'm afraid of the turning tools falling off and severing my toes or, even worse, blunting the ends of the tools. I may have put this one on the strip once or twice. Wonder if that would be enough to magnetize it?

The motor is creating an electro-magnetic field - now if that has anything to do with your skew, I doubt it, but I thought I would discuss the obvious... =)

Now that you've cleaned off the filings, does it feel lighter? That sounds like a lot of extra metal, for you to feel it. Then again, I'd probably not notice the difference, if I picked up a 2 lb. sledge.[:D]
