I have been turning for a year and a half (bowls, hollow forms, etc) and decided to make some pens for the holidays. This is my first pen after much research and reading on this excellent site!

Curly maple slim line with a ca finish. (I think I will be keeping serial #0001 for myself.):)

Nicely done!! Much better than my first one!

Thanks! Not bad, but my second wasn't so good. My ca finish clouded while I was sanding it down. I wasn't using accelerant. Nearest I can figure there are 3 potential causes: 1) the blank was too wet (didn't check it), 2) the ca had moisture condense in it because I had left it in my unheated garage, I mean workshop, overnight, or 3) the blank was not sealed at the ends (because I just figured out that is the right thing to do) and moisture got under the surface. Since there was only one day between this first pen and the second and I used the same ca and same process I am thinking #1 or #2. Oh well, sand and redo correctly with a new ca to be kept indoors after opening!

Nice job on the pen and welcome to the forum.
I still have my first pen and look it over every now and then.
Can't believe all the mistakes I made.
Where in Michigan are you located?
Be sure to check out the Michigan chapter.

Pen 1 looks great!

Perhaps you sanded through the CA on pen 2 causing some of the clouding. If wet sanding, then moisture probably got in as well as the ends.
Keep at it!

It looks beautiful. Looks like the tramline from penn state, the nice thing about that type it its less likely to break compared to the slimline, a very good choice for a first pen. I definitely recommend keeping it. I still keep my first pen in my jewelry box and I am always happy to look at it

Great pen! I knew I was getting better when I started making sure that the difference in diameter between the wood and metal was invisible, or almost so. Looks like you're well on your way to getting there more quickly than I did.
