I am now officially done with red cedar...I LOVE teh stuff, but I have a feeling it may be the cluprit in my trip to the ER this morning ...

Last night, I had these big red welts...they morphed into each other, and became giant welts...

This morning, when I woke up, I was covered in giant hives (size of teacups and dinner plates) all over, and had to go on immuno-suppressory treatment..only thing I can think that would be causing it is the cedar dust...

Time for a dust collector, for sure!!

Welcome to the DC side of pen turning! Sorry to hear about this. I have different but equally bad allergies to CA and have done all I can to keep using CA. The DC system was only half of it for me but it was a big half!

Double canister mask, long sleeve shirts, and damp towel close by to knock the dust off.

Be careful with this aspect. Pen turning is fun but there can be limits. Your health is the most important!

I wore a mask this time because of all the threads!! It was just a dust mask though, and I had the short-sleeved smock on, so my arms themselves weren't protected that well..

I turned a Wenge pen too; I wonder if that was the culprit instead?

Andrew, once you isolate the wood or woods causing the problem, give them up. Russ Fairfield state it best in that if you are allergic to oily exotics, don't turn them as there are plenty of other wood species out there.

Your reaction is the wood's way of telling you "stop messing with me!" I hope you get better! I had an irritation from brazilian tulipwood and the DC took care of it 100%....it wasn't an allergic reaction though, just an irritation so I'd take more precaution if I were you or give up that wood all together!
