This is a continuation on my input to @KenB259 's post about edge grain inserts for the 360 herringbone pattern. I saw a really cool post by @ochoabrian who 3D printed a blank that accepts the wood pieces. I just invested in a 3D printer and wanted to give that a try. I modeled up my own version and gave it a ride. I really don't have an eye or knack for segmenting. I am in awe of so many of you that have amazing creations, including my good friend @Alan Morrison . Anyway, for anyone who's interested, I'm happy to share anything I've done here. I know Brian also sells his 3D printed blanks, so if you don't have a printer, hit him up! I'll re-post the pictures I shared on Ken's thread, as well as the finished pen. The wooden inserts really do pop and is hard to capture in a photo. I'm very open to suggestions as to how to better balance the design of segmenting, etc. I know I have way too many colors of wood in this. Does the malee burl compliment the herrinbone pattern or distract? Maybe limit the use of the herringbone pieces to just one half of the pen? Is the kit choice too ornate, making it too busy? I've done that a LOT, as some of you might know... Thanks in advance for any input/suggestions. Also, hit me up if you have any questions.

Also, the woods used are Padauk, purple heart, osage orange, walnut and brown malee (or is it red....).

Happy Holidays everyone!
Richard

I agree with Ken & Steve - I really like the wood combination, the 3D printed "housing" for the wood pieces and also acts as the divider. If I had a any critique, it's simply my opinion, but I would not have added the two black rings as endcaps on the cap. If end caps were needed (to transition the herringbone pattern to the Malee) I would have used a wood that blended in better, maybe with a simple veneer or polystyrene sheet divider. But again, that is only my opinion. The pen is beautiful as-is.

Very nice work and lovely wood choices.

I see what you're saying, thanks Kevin!
