My Hotmail account was recently hacked and a message was sent out regarding discount electronics. This message did not originate with me. I have taken steps to increase my computer security and changed my Hotmail password in order to minimize the chance of this occurring again. I apologize for the “spamâ€.

It may have come through me lou. I also apologise to all who may have been infected. I am STILL trying to deal with it this end. It hacks your email list and sends out to everyone on the list.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to kill this beast. I am using AVG and AVG spyware at this time

Make sure your anti-virus definitions are up to date. Also, you can go to Mcafee website and run the free Stinger Tool http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

Network Associates, the producers of Mcafee, provide this utility for free from their website even if you do not normally use their products. I work for a very large communications company and we have used it for years. It is safe.

Actually I guessed what was going on when I received the email.

As stated above, buy a mac. I have had one for about four months and really wonder now why I deprived myself for soooo long.

Create an entry in your address book that has an invalid email address. Mine is named AAAA so it is at the top of the list. If a program starts sending email to everyone in your address book, this one will bounce and you will get the obligatory email notification and know to start investigating. Of course this is in addition to keeping your virus, adware, spyware, malware etc software up to date.
