Are any of you gun fanatics? While visiting an old friend here in Arkansas, I was given a Thompson Hawken 50 cal rifle. I don't know much about it, except that it sure looks pretty after I used some brasso on it! And I don't know a ton about guns, I got it thinking mostly of my father-in-law.
Any of you know much about this particular gun?

Heavy barrel, short stock, percussion lock. Off hand I would say it's probably a .45 or .50 caliber. I shoot flintlocks not percussion, but if it's a reproduction it's probably worth $150-200 depending on the condition. You can check out Dixie Gun Works which may have more info on them (www.dixiegunworks.com).

The Thompasons are pretty decent smokepoles, be sure to use 2F powder or the Pyrodex equivalent, if it's a 45 you can get by with 3F just make certain to measure, Like Muggsy I shoot a Flintlock Thompsons were mostly percussion caps, also get ready for some nasty cleaning, I shoot 20 or 30 rounds and spend the next two hours cleaning the bore, but then I use Black Powder instead of Pyrodex which is supposed to be cleaner. I know Goex powder is getting scarce thanks to Homless security. Muzzle loaders are fun. and you learn to hold your target, in the long run shooting a flintlock will make you a better marksman with a conventional rifle, so will a percussion cap, you learn not to flinch.

Always make sure the bullet left the barrel before reloading. :frown:

(Yes, I've got a CVA with two bullets stuck in the barrel, and a charge of Pyrodex between them.)

Im a newer Gen smoke poler mine is inline and I use Goex 3f I just have to remember to cut the measured load in half or it is just flame!!! Looks cool at dawn or dusk but not very efficient. Shoot it and you may have a new hobby!!!!

That's what I'm afraid of!

i did civil war re-enacting for awhile and everything sais before is correct. lots of fun, but lots of cleaning. i shot a reproduction enfield 50 cal.

Reading this thread has made me dearly miss my staghorm magnum inline. That was the second funnest weapon i ever shot. First being a .22 Hornet single shot.

I have a .22 rifle at home that I haven't shot in years. A little semi auto savage arms from walmart. 22's are fun to shoot and ammo is cheap!!
I've shot an SKS also, that was pretty cool...

If you like shooting your .22, go find a .22 hornet!!! You will fall in love! The hornet has alot more powder behind the same tiny bullet. Awesome little rifle! I think they are marketed like the .17 HMR... varmint huntin mostly. I know they make short work of those pesky paper targets!

I grew up with a 7.62 attached to my arm! I think the SK is one of the best rifles to own (Russian version of course). Big boom, cool looks, decent accuracy, and most important, RELIABILITY! My younger brother could shoot a can on the ground and get it to bounce up, and then shoot it again while it was airborn... with an SKS!

Oh the joys of high power firearms!!!
