For several months now, when trying to print documents I have created with MS Word, most of the document will not print. e.g. a 400 page document will print all but the first ten pages. A recent five pager will only print page 4. The page numbers do print but the text won't. Someone told me I have password protected the documents but I don't use a password on my computer. Anybody out there able to help with this?

Frank,

If you would...email me the document and I will take a look. Without seing it, I cannot really help much.

One thing I can recommend is to copy paste the document to a NOTEPAD text document. That will clear most settings, which may be causing your problem. Or will atleast show if there are hidden special characters causing your problem. This happens when you copy paste from sources like the internet.

Note that you will have to re-format the document after you "clean" it. Might involve re-copying it to MSWord if you want/need the bells and whistles which is absent in notepad.

Hope this helps.

Like Dario said, there may be embedded special character sets in the document. Try as Dario said or open a new doc in word and cut and paste a section or two at a time until you find the one causing the problem. Time consuming but it should help.

Sometimes this happens when it is a scanned and optically recognized document. Try highlighting the section that is not printing and see what the formatting says. If it is blank, then change it to say Normal in Times New Roman and 12 font. You can also see what the section before that is formatted to and just make sure the missing section matches. Do a print preview to see if it is there. I know my way around Microsoft office pretty good and have tinkered enough to be dangerous. Give it a shot, it may work. Be sure to save a second copy before you do anything. Name it the same with a 1 behind it.

I took one of the documents that was giving me problems and pasted it into Notepad. I saved it there then reversed into a blank Word document. From that I was able to print 14 copies (five pages) without a hitch. I did lose formatting and had to redo. This tells me some kind of formatting gremlin got into those documents. I have sent to others as attachments and they print just fine at the other end, adding to the mystery. I do wish Microsoft would come out with a Word Lite version containing about two thousand less options.

Another possibility might be the memory in the printer. A laser printer has to have enough RAM to hold the 'picture' of the page in it. If you use a laser printer try setting the DPI down to 300 or 150.

Frank, you might want to get a programmers editor that can show you all the control characters in the file. A free one is NoteTab. I use the registered version. Have also use a few other over the years like Vedit+. Note tap will strip the characters. The programmers editor will let you find the gremlin and keep the formatting.

Thanks, I'll look into Note Tab today. What I was able to figure out is that the problem is something in the Word options. What, is still a mystery. I took one five page document and pasted it into Notepad and saved it there. Then I re-pasted back into a blank Word document and printed. I lost some of the formatting but it printed just fine. This tells me there is a hidden protection somewhere in Word. It's making me nutso. Yes, folks, worse than usual. [:p]
