I have been using Two part epoxy (30 min.) exclusively since I started making pens , and have had no problems at all . Last week , I was going to make a pen using one of Karls Glacier blanks with a Black TI , Cigar . I was pressed for time , and decided to use CA to glue up the tubes . Turned and finished the blanks to a high gloss . I assembled the lower barrel , then I positioned the center band in the upper barrel . When I pushed to get it started , the tube came out the other end . Panic , began to take over . I decided to press the CB and the cap adaptor in at the same time . DUMB , took over ! I didn't thread the cap & clip on first . And , I usually put just a drop of thin CA on the parts before I press them into the tubes .
When I hurriedly pressed them together , it burried the threads for the cap , inside the tube , and also cracked the Glassy looking Glacier barrel I got from Karl . So , Ken ! Don't feel too bad , I had my day too ! [)]

Thanks Cav ! This one took a little longer to get over , because of the sentiment value . But , I'm over it . I still have more of Karls stuff ! :D

Those little falls into reality are good for us I guess, painful, sometimes expensive, but necessary, they make a good reality check, I just hope the next one doesn't bounce :D:D:D

Chuck your mind was not set onto your pen when mistake like this happen lucky for you to have more blanks, I use medium CA for all my tubes and have not problem but never put CA on part to be pressed especialy with thin CA that can be calling for trouble IMHO

Thanks Serge ! I made some Sculptured kits from PSI . After selling them to a few customers , SOME of them were returned with the nib pushed out by the spring on the refill . The finial and clip off a few others . It became necessary to prevent this problem , before they were sold , and not after . I don't buy this kit any more . And , that's the only style I've had returned . Thank you for your comments ! [8D]

Chuck,

There are two kinds of turners: Those who screw up on occasion and liars!!:D

Hang in there, it will get better.

You mean the frequency can go down from alot to occasionally? Then there is hope for me yet!
Really, there is?

I feel your pain-- a few years ago when I was learning how to do a CA finish, I piled it up too high on a couple of pens and cracked it when assembling. DOH!

As a side note, you mentioned using CA as you assemble the pens--- I did this for a while but had a problem with the CA blooming and getting white frosty junk all over the pen refill, which would look real cheezy when the customer removes the old refill to put in a new one.

I switched over to using the epoxy and I found it a LOT easier to handle--- if it ever oozed out when the pen was pressed together, it was a lot easier to clean up than the quickly-curing CA----- and it does not "bloom".

I use 5-minute epoxy for this, if I have it at hand.
