OK guys I need some more help. How do you deal with adding separation between the layers? If I put the separation on both sides it works fine except for now. I have double layers of the separation material. If I put the separation material only on one side then the pieces don't fit together tight, the exact same amount of the dimension of the separation material. If I try to put a layer in between with no separation material, then the pieces don't fit together tightly. this seems to be not as simple as it should be regarding the separating of the layers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This is funny Ken because this is what I am going to be attempting myself thus the veneers as I started to gather. I have been communicating with a person on FB who has shown me a few things because this guy'S work is far above anyone I have seen who has done these. What you need to do is put veneer (instead of calling it separation) on an end grain and not 2 flat sides. Now I have not done any yet because he basically told me to start with Don Wards tutorial to make a few basic ones to get the lay of the way things need to line up which is what I will do.

The way he explained it to me is. I will try to post these photos and it should explain it better. Now remember use whatever you want and make whatever thickness you want. This is just basic idea. Now he just grabbed a bunch of his photos so the pictures are not all of the same blanks as you can tell. he starts with a block of wood, he happens to use pen blanks or anything he has. You can use a longer piece to get more slices out of it. he puts the blue veneer on these and then slices in strips to whatever size he needs thus the second photo. ( man I thought I edited this but must have not hit send) Sorry but left important step out. After he slices them he then puts veneer on one face of these slices. Then he wraps all these slices together in saran wrap and cuts squares all at once instead if individual. I should mention the blocks he starts with will be the same as his squares. 4th photo shows the ends that the veneer winds up on. Now this is all predicated on blanks I shown in 5th photo which are the kind he makes. Now if you are attempting something different than I am out and have no clues or answers for you. Hope someone else can help. But these are the type blanks I will be attempting. There is so many patterns you can incorporate within these designs and he does them. he makes alot of kitless pens from these and they are beautiful.

Now with this said, to me these are more appealing to me than lasers because of the man made aspect of them. But two different methods to get to same place I guess. To make by hand is not an easy feat. So much has to go right.

That helps tremendously, thank you. I'll give it another go. Don's write up is very helpful. When it comes to more info though, people are tight lipped. I'm also working on a glue up jig for gluing the left and right pieces together

Ok now you have to share any jigs you made to make these. :) My guy won't share his jig yet. You are way ahead of me on this so I will be picking your brain. He said and everyone who has made these have said consistency and exactness is key. Like many segmented blanks this is true. You know this for sure too. This is one of my big projects this year as well as my trinket boxes that i want to build. If I can make these 2 items it will be a great off season. Winter is my best shop time days. What I did was download both Don's paper but also Darrin's paper and between both of them I can see how things go together. The adding of veneers is just taking it a step up. If I could only get the triangle method would take it to even another level because there was a pen I want so bad to try. I could not get answers back then because lips were even tighter than they are today.

Heck I am still trying to get answers about cutting abalone strips weather with a laser or any other method. When I ask about a laser I get crickets. I understand people selling their blanks but I am of the believe to share is all part of expanding the hobby. One of these days the mystery will be spilled.

I'll certainly show my glue up jig, it's pretty close to where I want it to be. As you know if these pieces aren't glued perfectly, you'll have gaps. My jig should make that part easier.

Yep My guy said the same thing. He has it down to perfection and easy repeatable which is key because these take some time to make. if you go to sell them they will probably be your biggest $$ blanks.

Hi Ken,

I really don't see why your single sided glue-ups don't fit together as you say. The additional thickness shouldn't make a difference as they are all uniform. It'd be the same as removing the veneer thickness from the main piece, then gluing the veneer on. The glue up you show on the right just looks like it should work, to me! I'm guessing there is something I'm not understanding correctly.... Good luck, either way! I think the veneer separation layers look top notch. Looking forward to your progress!

Best,
Richard

Yeah that's what I thought too. Believe me, it makes a difference.
