I am considering purchasing some mold material from alumilite, The HSSC2. I wondering how much I need for a four pen mold and a bottle stopper mold. Will I need more than 1 lb?

Any help in getting through this mold making would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Larry

Larry,

Chances are yes. I have been making the 4 blank molds in the classifieds and they are 1lb 12oz. I can't see any mold material being almost half the weight.

Why use HSSC2? I am uncertain what it is or how expensive it is but why not use silicone rubber? Smooth-On makes some decent products.

Not that it really helps as it is like comparing apples to asparagus, but my 5 ups all took 900g to 950g of material each.

The newer ones don't have the hand holds on the end. This mold will fit on a shelf inside a pressure pot.
That is just awesome. I may have to incorporate some of your ideas into my next mold.

Thanks. Just curious, which ideas are you considering? There are 3 distinct additions besides the hand holds. (this is a test :))

.
  • Springform pan
  • hand holds
  • 'baseplate' under blanks to create someplace for overflow resin to go, instead of my workbench. This will be super handy when casting money blanks, et al.
  • I liked using 'walls' to block off the corners to allow the round mold to be used with a shelf system in the pot. However, I think that I will try to hold them in place/caulk with goop, rather than clay.

What did I miss?

The concept incorporations were
  • hand holds
  • Baseplate to create overflow "headspace"
  • half full lines in each cavity to make 50/50 laminations
  • mid-line marking in each cavity- marking the blank in half for easy cutting

Seems that more and more people want 50/50 blanks for their sport teams. One problem with the laminatons is that you cast the first half then have to wait till hard gel, or almost full cure to make your second or you will get color mixing and a muddy mid-line. Also the blanks curl up slightly. This is due to the shrinkage of the second layer crawling back from the ends. It is also good to pressure cast the second layer.

If I make more of that pattern mold, I will reposition the mold in the springform, and pour urethane side plugs that can be attached to the mold/springform baseplate and as such replace the clayed plexi panels.
