With my fast approaching retirement Connie has gently asked(read told me) that she'd like me to build the bed pictured below.

I had been looking at a pencil post bed featured in last months Wood magazine and mentioned building it. She said she'd rather have a Mission style bed if I were going to build one and started searching different sites. She came up with this one

This has to be some of the nicest Mission styles I've seen but what I like about his is the finish he uses. Take a look there's some fantastic stuff here if you like mission Style. He goes into a lot of detail on the site but will send you detailed step by step instructions for a small fee.
I've got to do some looking and pricing as she wants quartersawn oak and brush up on cutting mortise and tenons but hey I'm gonna be retired right?
I've built a good bit of furniture but never anything of this magnitude and that's a lot of oak if I screw up!

Mick, How long does your Wood mag subscription go back? There's a "mission-ish" oak bed, side table, and dresser in a couple issues a few years back. If you need it I'll take a look for it when I get home tonight. I didn't build any of the pieces but my dad did (all three) and they came out beautifully.

Mike,
Rockler has plans for a mission bed very similar to the one shown in the picture. I built a futon from their plans out of quartersawn white oak and it turned out just great. Hope you have a good place to buy the oak, it can get a little pricey when yoou get into the big stuff.

Mick! That's a nice looking bed! I am particularly intrigued by the groupings of three. Very cool!

If I can make a suggestion, get some pine and do some mock-ups of the parts you're unsure of before you start cutting the oak. Mortise-and-tenon is traditional, but there are other ways to achieve the same effect. Consider doing it whatever way makes it easiest for you, unless you want an excuse to get a dedicated mortiser! Either way, this would be a fun project! Good for you! But be warned, no matter how fast you work on it, it will not be fast enough!

Scott.
