Mini pine cones? If you're buying them, why am I trying to find the largest ones known to mankind?

Can I see an example of what to do with the mini pine cones? I have to ask because my parents have hundreds of those little one all over the place every year. I'm assuming you cast them but how do they look compared to the big ones?

This is one of the pens we have made out of them. They like like little roses when turned

I should drive up the hill and have my kids fill the trunk of my car with Pinion Pine cones.
they are huge, and could double as small trees.

Yep, I'm disgusted too..buying pine cones in the fall? I can walk outside and find hundreds of all sizes and types for free. What I wonder though is the big ones seem like they would waste quite a large quantity of acrylic. Do people trim the big fat ones to be skinnier to save on resin? I've got ones that are probably 3 inches wide out there and there's no pen that fat and still comfy. If you do trim them, how?

I trim mine down on a bandsaw and cast them after they are the size of a normal blank.

Here is another example of a redwood cone they are small enought that you can make a blank out of 4 or 5 of them.

Jay,

I've been moving this week and will have my casting table set up and ready to cast by Monday morning. Still, I have been checking in to see what you guys are up to.... Mini Pine Cones..... okay off to Target I go. So now I have a few questions (BIG surprise!!!) :)

Did you cast these in a brick? 'Cause these things are not going to fit into my 3/4" individual blank molds. No problem..... I have "mini loaf pans" (my 'lil buckets)

Also, has anyone tried "dipping" these in a lighter color, let them cure and then cast into a darker color? Just curious (that gets me in trouble ALOT):giggle:

Just a Note....Not all trees grow in all areas....so what is very common to you could be almost exotic to others.....
just keep that in mind...if you have excess offer to others.....

The cones that I have been using are anywhere from 1/2" to 3/4" and I pack them into a 15/16" molds. I have tried the dipping method, but have found it to be very time consuming and not a lot to show for the effort.
