Oh, and i plan on using silmar 41 resin also.

Does anyone see a problems or issues using simar to cast these cones in?

Thanks for any info on this.

I've made a few pine cone blanks and did not stabilize. I cast in a pressure pot about 60 psi. I am guessing stabilizing wouldn't hurt but I finish the blank using CA so stabilizing may not be needed.

I confess...Yep! Under cover of darkness, I tossed some into your yard. Just looking for a reaction. Now I am off to other pen turner's yards. Weeee! This is fun!!

STOP IT!!!!! unless your gonna toss some green stuff in the form of $100's next time

Thanks guys, gonna put them in the toaster oven for a bit and cast them in a day or 2

We have had some high winds lately, closest pine tree i think they came from is about 80 or so yards from the neighbor's tree.
Speaking of darkness

No need to stabilize at all. I haven't tried silmar with cones. Pressure would help get it into the crooks and crannies. Have fun with the colors!

Thanks Buzzzz
I'm sure most use alumilite, thought about getting some during the sale but didnt. I'm thinking silmar wont shrink away from the cone like castin craft does.

After searching for about 30 minutes, this was all that i found. Putting them into the toaster oven now and will do so for a few days to be sure they are dry.

I had some regular size pine cones that were dry when I got them, but they still sat for a year in the garage before I cast them. I got them cast and started to work with them, when I cut them to length pine tar started coming out the stem. Do you pretty well have to heat them to drive out all the pine tar or can they just age naturally and if so how long?

Thanks, Mike
