I have been fiddling with eye shadow for pigment in the few castings I have done, but I have trouble getting it ground up consistently small enough to make it look good.

I have decided to invest in some mica powder, but I am not sure how much to get. I comes in 1 oz, 8 oz, and 1 lb containers.

How far does an ounce usually go in castings? I know that it will vary by size, saturation, and color, but I am looking for a rough idea of how much I need of a color to try it out.

One ounce is plenty unless you do a lot of casting. You can also get a sampler package which consists of something like 100 teaspoon size samples of different colors. This is how I started and I still haven't used it all after 18 months. To me, this is the best way to figure out what colors you like and what works best for you. Then you can go ahead and order the 1 oz containers of the colors you like best.

Start with the samples. 1 oz. is quite a bit and if you don't like the color, it's a waste.

I found the sample set by telling it to show me all products.

The full sampler is $120 for a sample of each color, then they have a smaller sampler with 12 of the paradise micas for $12.

If you are really into casting, the big set is awesome. It can keep you very busy for months believe it or not.

If you are just getting started and think you might not get into casting in a big way, try out the small set. It will still get you started nicely.

Or do as I did this weekend and order samples of just the colors you want. Lots of colors in the big sample set that I know I would not use. $17 compared to $120...:befuddled:

We bought 15 samples and haven't near used them up, but we haven't been doing much casting, A tiny bit goes a good ways, and it's a finer powder than with Pearl-Ex.
